Ability to see History/Activity on a completed task

I was under the understanding that the history/activity of a task could be part of our audit trail. However, recently when I was trying to piece together the timeline of events, the history tab is not accessible when task is closed and the only action is to make the task "open" again. To me this somewhat defeats the purpose of an audit trail. I was advised by support that it is because we should not be able to add any activity to a closed task to which I agree but that does not explain why we can't see (as read only) the history. I believe that this is an essential feature.
